Kennedy Jr. officially qualified for the ballot in Michigan, a key battleground state that could prove pivotal in deciding the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. Natural Law Party of Michigan chair Doug Dern told CNN the party nominated Kennedy in a convention on Wednesday. Back in November 1872, for instance, the newspaper publisher and Democratic presidential candidate Horace Greeley died after Election Day but before the casting of Electoral College votes. No one knows for sure what would happen if a candidate died or for some reason needed to withdraw from the race. The Kennedy-aligned super PAC American Values 2024 announced late last year that it would be investing eight figures to assist the signature-gathering efforts of Kennedy's campaign. According to the DNC complaint, that amounts to an illegal contribution from American Values 2024 to Kennedy's campaign, "in violation of federal law." The Kennedy campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The campaign has previously denied coordinating with the super PAC on ballot access efforts. FEC filings show Mellon also donated $10 million to MAGA Inc., the main pro-Trump super PAC, last year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Self-help author and spiritual guru Marianne Williamson on Wednesday announced the end of her long-shot Democratic challenge to President Joe Biden. She won just 2% of the vote in South Carolina and about 3% in Nevada. “I hope future candidates will take what works for them, drinking from the well of information we prepared,” Williamson wrote in announcing the end of her bid. She tweaked Biden, an avid Amtrak fan, by announcing her campaign at Washington’s Union Station. That followed a new plan by the Democratic National Committee, championed by Biden, that reordered the party’s 2024 presidential primary calendar by leading off with South Carolina on Feb. 3.

Arguing that voters of color should play a larger role in determining the Democratic presidential nominee, Biden championed a calendar beginning in South Carolina. President Joe Biden has won the South Carolina Democratic primary, NBC News projects. Running against Biden were House Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., and self-help author and 2020 Democratic candidate Marianne Williamson. NBC News' Decision Desk projects that Biden will be awarded all 55 Democratic delegates in South Carolina. South Carolina holds open primaries, which means any voter registered in the state is permitted to vote in either party's primary. The Biden reelection campaign is rejecting the political organizing model that Obama used during his campaign for a second term in 2012, in which Obama largely shunned the Democratic National Committee and opted instead to set up his own vast electioneering machine. Several top DNC officials at the time complained that they were ignored by Obama, while state parties complained they were starved for resources. “One of the big challenges in 2012 was a national competition and rub between (Organizing For Action) and the state parties. Jim Messina, Obama’s 2012 campaign manager, previously told CNN that he believes the Obama campaign spent too much too early. Though O’Malley Dillon will now shift fully into politics, she remained deeply engaged with campaign operations throughout her time in the West Wing.
